If you are an HR manager or leader, you may have seen your employees and leaders experience long work hours, stress, and pressure to always be on, resulting in emotional pain in the workplace.
I can resonate with this reality working as a leader in corporate Finance for the past 28 years, while raising two daughters. Balancing a high demanding career with motherhood resulted in burnout. I concluded that there must be a better way to live. I understand the negative impacts of long work hours, stress, and pressure on individuals, resulting in emotional pain in the workplace.
Working in Finance there were always tight deadlines, no room for mistakes, and constant change. I often had problems staying present, managing negative thoughts, and sustaining balance at work. This often resulted in me reacting on autopilot.
For example, there was a time when I was working 7 days a week, 8 hours a day, trying to complete a financial system implementation and also had a tough deadline to deliver a presentation to the board of directors. I found myself under high pressure, with a negative and distracted mindset, which resulted in snapping at colleagues. Does this sound familiar to you?
My reacting on autopilot led to damaged work relationships and chronic stress which resulted in insomnia.
Once I discovered evidence based Mindful Based Stress Reduction and Mindful Self-Compassion, I cultivated a strong daily practice, I learned the power of a simple “pause”.
I started responding with intention, to help support myself, my staff, and co-workers with a compassionate and wise response.
I stopped reacting and found more focus, increased productivity, balance, resilience, and improved work relationships.
I learned to take a simple pause to gain focus and clarity. Sounds simple, but it’s not always easy to do. Want to empower your team in doing the same?
